1- Bandaging techniques- SA Flashcards
Why are bandages used?
Aid ongoing healing
Stabilise wound
Prevent disruption
Protection from contamination/trauma
What is the primary layer of a bandage?
layer with direct contact with the wound
Most important
What is the secondary layer of a bandage?
Padding material:
- Supportive padding dressing (cotton wool/soft roll)
- Open weave bandage
List 3 complications which can occur in bandages
Swelling (too tight? not included all off foot)
Tissue necrosis (too tight)
Decubital ulcers
Patient interference
What is the tertiary layer of the bandage
Last layer to be applied, hold all others in place and provide a protection
Usually a cohesive layer (e.g. vet wrap)
What dressing would be appropriate for use on an infected wound from a road traffic accident
Alginate
Silver impregnated
Manuka honey
Topical wound gels
Select the option with the most appropriate reasons for using a bandage
Support healing wounds, protect against further injury, prevent or control swelling
What is an impregnated wound dressing
have something on them to facilitate wound healing petroleum or antibiotics and can be used for superficial open wounds.
What is a semi-occlusive wound dressing
have a non stick material with a central absorbent core and often come with a adhesive to allow the dressing to be kept in place and are good for short term post surgical closure
What are absorbent wound dressings
often padded and colour coded to show which side goes onto the wound they can be designed to absorb different amount of exudate from large wounds not suitable for surgery and remove it from the surface whilst maintaining a moist healing area
Describe a alginate wound dressing
made of naturally occuring kelp/seaweed that can be moistened and applied to the wound- help to encourage release in to the wound inflammatory factors
