1 Topography of the Urinary System Flashcards
Wht are the 2 centres of the neural apparatus for the urinary system?
continence
micturition
How long are the ureter?
Are they retro-peritoneal?
25cm long
superior 12.5cm is retro-peritoneal, the rest is intra-peritoneal
What part of the urinary system passes through the pelvic floor?
urethra
Which surface of the kidney is covered by parietal peritoneum?
the anterior side
What fascia is immediately anterior to the kidney?
Gerota’s fascia
Which fascia is immediately posterior to the kidney?
Zuckerland’s fascia
Where is the retro-peritoneal space?
all around the perineal space, weird
Where might left and right perineal spaces connect?
across the midline through a fenestrated barrier anterior to the aorta and vena cava
What are the 3 main muscles of the posterior abdominal wal?
Quadratus Lumborum
Psoas Minor
Psoas Major
How do the medial and lateral lumbocostal arches form?
the quadratus lumborum and psoas thicken around the top 1/3 of the kidney
What structure do the lumbocostal arches create?
the paravertebral gutters
this shows the superior 1/3 of the kidney is behind the diaphragm
At what vertebral level do the left and right renal arteris form?
L2-L2
Why is the left renal vein longer than the right renal vein?
Because the IVC lies to the right of the vertebral column
What does the left renal vein drain?
left kidney
left gonadal vein
portion of the left ascending lumbar vein
What caps the superomedial surfaces of the each kidney?
suprarenal glands
