What is permanent wood?
Woody parts of vine that are 1+ years, including trunk
Where to buds form and what do they become?
Form between leaf stalk (petiole) and stem – with maturation, become green parts of vine
What are inflorescences?
Cluster of flowers on a stem which become a bunch of grapes at fruit set
What is photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water (with light) = Sugar + Oxygen
What are prompt buds?
Form and open in same growing season
What is layering?
Cane is bent down and section is buried in ground, once roots are established, the cane linking new growth to original is cut (doesn’t allow for rootstock use)
What are grapes a type of? What do they include? (4)
Type of berry
Includes: pulp, skin, seeds and bloom
What is one-year-old wood?
Main shoots from the last growing season the were kept at pruning
What is a cutting?
Section of a vine shoot is planted then grows as a new plant (most common)
What are lateral shoots?
Grow from prompt buds, smaller and thinner than main shoots
What are bunches?
Fertilized inflorescences
What are compound buds?
Form in one growing season, and open the next (also called latent buds)
What forms the cane?
When green shoots become wood/rigid and turn brown in late summer
What is the stem’s function?
Transports water/solutes to/from different structures, stores carbs
What is a hybrid?
Two parents of different species
