Aft
Toward the stern of the ship.
Amidships
The central part of a ship.
Ballast
Weight added to a ship to improve stability.
Beam
The greatest width of the ship.
Bilge
The lowest inner part of a ship’s hull.
Bow
The front of the ship.
Bulkhead
A vertical partition in a ship.
Deadweight
The total weight a ship can carry.
Draught
The vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel).
Even keel
A ship that is level in the water.
Freeboard
The distance from the waterline to the upper deck level.
Gangway
A platform or ramp used by passengers and crew to board or leave a ship.
Hatch
An opening in the deck of a ship.
Hull
The main body of a ship.
Keel
The central structural basis of the hull.
Knot
A unit of speed equivalent to one nautical mile per hour.
Mast
A vertical structure on a ship that supports sails or rigging.
Port
The left side of a ship when facing forward.
Starboard
The right side of a ship when facing forward.
Stern
The back end of the ship.
