What is prenatal or antenatal care?
Preconception care
Antepartum care: before birth but after conception
What is intrapartum?
Care for a woman in labor
What are the advantages of prenatal care?
Provide regular appointments
Prevents birth defects
Decrease maternal mortality
Improves outcomes for diabetes, hypertension and infections
What is inadequate prenatal care?
Delayed or no prenatal care
Due to many reasons
What are the focus of pre pregnancy counseling?
Lifestyle- smoking, drugs
Teratogen exposure- ionizing radiation, TORCH
Medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension
When should evaluation of the gravid woman take place?
As soon as pregnancy is diagnosed
No later than the second missed period
What are the major goals during evaluation of a gravid woman?
Assess maternal/ fetal health
Determine gestational age
Estimated date of confinement
Start care plan for pregnant woman
What is the duration of a normal pregnancy ?
280 days or 40 weeks
Calculated from first day of last period
What is the Naegele’s rule?
Helps determine the age of confinement
Minus 3 months plus 7 days from date of first day of last normal menstrual period
What is gravidity?
Number of times a woman has been pregnant regardless if interrupted or carried to full term
Nulligravida: woman who never has been pregnant
What is parity?
Number of pregnancy carried to viable gestational age
Nulliparous: woman who never carried a pregnancy beyond 20 weeks
What is parturient?
Woman in labor
What is puerpera?
Woman who just given birth
What is the OB history by series digits?
GPA system: gravid/parity/abortus
TPAL: term birth/ pre term/abortus/ living children
G3P1021: history of 3 pregnancies, 1 full term,0 pre term, 2 abortions and 1 living
What is the fundal height?
Height of the uterus above symphysis Estimated the gestation age Height in cm= gestation age in weeks Only accurate from 20-31 weeks Can be skewed with a full bladder
