1 - pathology of rashes Flashcards
1
Q
what are layers of epidermis?
A
- keratin (stratum corneum) = tough outer layer of corneocytes & keratinocytes
- granular layer = keratohyalin granules
- prickle cell layer = langerhan cells and prominent desmosomes
- basal layer = small cuboidal
2
Q
what are layers of dermis?
A
- papillary dermis (thin, just beneath epithelium)
- reticular dermis (thicker, type I collagen, also where appendages are)
3
Q
what is hyperkeratosis?
A
increased thickness of keratin layer
4
Q
what is parakeratosis?
A
persistence of nuclei in keratin
5
Q
what is acanthosis?
A
increased thickness of epithelium
6
Q
what is papillomatosis?
A
irregular epithelium thickening
7
Q
what is spongiosis?
A
oedema fluid in between squamous layers
8
Q
what are 4 main reaction patterns to inflammatory skin disorders?
A
- spongiotic (oedema) e.g. eczema
- psoriasiform (elongation rete ridges - wavy lines separating dermis & epidermis) e.g. psoriasis
- lichenoid- basal layer damage (lymphocytes damage epithelium) e.g. lichen planus or lupus
- vesiculobullous e.g. pemphigoid, pemphigus & dermatitis herpetiformis
