Rostow Model of Modernization (5 Steps)
- Traditional Society
- Pre-conditions for take-off (building infrastructure)
- Take off (Industrial revolution, rapid growth)
- Drive to maturity (new ideas and tech replacing the old)
- High mass consumption (greater wealth-> more purchases of goods and services)
Modernization theory (definition)
A theory which aims to describe/explain the transformation of traditional societies to systems of social interaction, economics, and politics to resemble those of westernized culture
Dependency Theory
The idea that the development of one area results in the under-development of another (and vice-versa)
Industrialism
Broad term used to describe the transformation of society itself
Industrialization
Mechanical process in which a society/country/world transforms itself from a primarily agricultural society into one based on manufacturing of goods and services
Industrial Revolution
Term first coined in early 1880s (100 years after first Industrial Revolution) - describes mass industrialization (large scale)
Expansionism
The westward and northern expansion of the US, and relocation/industrialization of new areas and cities
Urbanization
The process of mass movement of people from rural into higher density urban areas (cities)
