Q

On a pop. growth rate graph, what does a straight line on a log scale mean?

A

Straight line on a log scale = pop. declining exponentially in the long term

Means that pop. size changes by a constant factor each year

Q

What does λ mean in terms of pop. growth rate

A

= The long term pop. growth rate
Per time step change in pop. size
You choose time scale → often 1 year

Q

What do matrix models allow you to do?

A

1) Calculate long term growth to understand whether a pop. is likely to persist or eventually go extinct
2) Look at short-term behaviours to predict impact of diff reintroduction strategies
E.g should you move juveniles or adults to a new location?
3) Can do lots of other things e.g metrics like net reproductive rate (R0) and generation time (T) can be calculated from an MPM
