1. Lecture: TAPEWORMS- Diphyllobotriosis Flashcards
Who are the final hosts and who are the intermediate hosts of the parasite DIBOTHRIOCEPHALUS LATUS (latin-genus of Diphyllobothriosis) ?
IH: 1. copepod-in body cavity, 2. fish, amphibians and reptiles
How does final host get infection (of DIBOTHRIOCEPHALUS LATUS) ?
raw, undercooked fish (sushi) and caviar (pike, trout, perch, minnow)
what does plerocercoid look like in a fish and where is it located?
-6-20 mm long, creamy color, wrinkled.
-Located in: muscles, abdominal wall, liver, ovaries
describe adult worm: of plerocercoid?
-up to 20m
-elongated scolex
-scolex with 2 grooves
-SUCKERS (no hooks)
-mature proglottids WIDER than long
-uterine pore present
-uterine and genital pore medialle
-uterus rosette-like-coiled and central
how to tell difference between cyclophyllidean chain of proglottids and pseudophyllidean strobila?
-cyclophyllidean proglottis: 2 sets of genital organs on the sides (moniezia expanse, moniezia benedeni) 2 sets female 2 sets male>no uterine opening > uterus filling whole segments
-pseudophyllidean stropila: proglottis arranged in strobila (=chain)
==body consists of proglottids/segments this together forms strobila (chain)> rosette-like-coiled uterus medially
egg morphology?
eggs with operculum and small knob
what are main symptoms of diphyllobothriasis in humans and animals?
mostly asymptomatic-but long-lasting infection.>animals : fatigue, abdomianl pain, bomiting, diarrhea-weight loss, anemia > humans: long lasting, vitamin b12-deficiency, anemia, abdominal cramps, cholecystitis, intestinal obstruction
what method can be used to identify eggs of this worm?
-faecal flotation method
-sedimentation method
how to prevent infection?
-fish frozen or cooked
-infected human or animal faeces may not get into freshwater seas
-sushi no
