1 - Key Concepts - Cells Flashcards
What does an animal cell contain?
Cell Membrane
Cytoplasm
Mitochondria
Nucleus
Ribosomes
What does a plant cell contain?
Same as animal cell
+ cell wall
vacuole
chloroplasts
What does a bacteria cell contain?
Cell Membrane
Chromosomal DNA
Flagellum
Plasmid DNA
Ribosomes
What does the nucleus do?
Contains genetic material that controls the activity of the cell
What does the cell membrane do?
Holds the cell together - controls what goes in/out
What does the cell wall do?
Made of cellulose
Supports the cell
What do mitochondria do?
Where most of aerobic respiration takes place - transfers energy for the cell so it can work
What do ribosomes do?
Translation of genetic material in synthesis of proteins
What do chloroplasts do?
Where photosynthesis occurs - makes food for plant
also contain chlorophyll
What does the vacuole do?
Contains cell sap - sugars & salts
Maintains internal pressure to support cell
What is chromosomal/plasmid dna?
DNA not contained in a nucleus in bacteria
What does the flagellum do?
Rotates to make the bacterium move - away from harm & towards good
How is the sperm cell adapted to its function?
Long tail to swim to egg
Mitochondria for energy
Acrosome to store enzymes to break through the egg cell
Haploid nucleus
How is the egg cell adapted to its functions?
Nutrients in cytoplasm to feed embryo
Membrane changes structure after fertile to stop more sperm entering
Haploid Nucleus
How are ciliated epithelial cells adapted?
Have cilia hair on top
Made to move substances along the tissue
