Q

What happens in Anaphase?

A

Spindle fibres pull chromosomes apart - then move to opposite ends of the cell

Q

What happens in Telophase?

A

Membranes form around the chromosomes, becoming the nuclei of the two new cells
(nucleus divided)

Q

What happens in Cytokinesis?

A

Before telophase ends, cytoplasm and cell membrane divide - forms two separate cells

Q

How is Cancer caused?

A

Uncontrolled cell division - can result in a mass of abnormal cells/a tumour
If tumour invades & destroys surrounding tissue it’s cancer

Q

Describe growth in organisms in animals

A
  • All growth happens through cell division
  • Cells divide at fast rate when young - once you’re an adult cell division is for repair
  • Most cell differentiation lost at an early stage

Q

Describe growth in organisms in plants

A
  • Growth in height mainly due to cell elongation
  • Cell division usually happens in tips of roots/shoots
  • Grow continuously - continue to differentiate to develop new parts (eg leaves, roots)

Q

Why is cell differentiation important?

A

Allows cells to become specialised - allows multicellular organisms to work more efficiently

Q

What are percentile charts?

A

Used to monitor growth so patterns in development can be seen & problems are highlighted (eg obesity, dwarfism)

16
Q

What are stem cells?

A

Undifferentiated cells

17
Q

What is the function of stem cells in animals?

A

To help with growth and repairing tissues in the body

18
Q

What is the function of meristems in plants?

A

They can divide and differentiate for as long as the plant lives & repair damaged cells

19
Q

What are some benefits of using stem cells in medicine?

A

Create cells to replace those that have been damaged by disease or injury - creates potential for new cures

20
Q

What are some of the risks of stem cells in medicine?

A

Rejection - body triggers an immune response & gets rid of cell
Tumour development
Disease transmission
