What is organisational design?
It is a more normative, design-oriented discipline that its aim is producing frameworks and tools to create the best conditions for the success of the company. It’s main task is to coordinate the activities of the members of an institution (rules regarding structure and processes). “So it is a formal, guided process of how to integrate people, information, technology and strategy of an institution. It is used to match the form of the organisation ad closely as possible to the objective the company seeks to achieve”.
What is an organisational structure?
For example ORGANISATIONAL CHARTS: are graphical depictions of official roles in the company and their relationships to each other.
What are organisational processes?
They are a dynamic view of the activities, the decision process, the flow of information or goods. This processes are often assigned to teams.
Examples of informal responsibilities, procedures…
- informal norms
- informal leaders
- informal communication
Reasons for a reorganisation:
- changes in the environment of the company
- introduction of new products
- changes regarding management (CEO)
INTERNAL:culture, staff, strategy…
EXTERNAL:customers, competitors, tech changes…

- INCREASING DIVERSITY
- the workforce gets more heterogeneous
- can be source of innovation but also conflicts and communication problems.
- Organisational Design need to cope with different types of interactions, dress, presentation, appearance.
- NEED FOR FLEXIBILITY
- people seek for flexibility in their work schedule
- less detailed rules and procedures that would eventually speed up information processes
- greater autonomy and encouragement for initiative

Difference between formal and informal organisation
FORMAL O. Is an organisation in which the job of each member is clearly defined, whose authority, responsibility and accountability are fixed. INFORMAL O. Is formed within the formal organisation as a network of interpersonal relationships when people interact with each other.
