1)DIFFUSION Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration down a concentration gradient
What is a partially permeable membrane?
allows some molecules to cross easier while others with diff or not at all (usually large mol)
How does diffusion help living molecules?
to obtain their requirements, get rid of waste products and carry out gas exchange
Give 1 example of diffusion in plants
Plants need 02 for respiration it travels between air spaces in the spongy mesophyll to the mitochondria in all cells
Explain the movement of particles in diffusion
All particles move randomly
Where does the energy for diffusion come from?
Kinetic energy
Does a big or small SA make diffusion happen slower?
Big
Does a big or small SA make diffusion happen slower?(WHY?)
It takes longer for the substances to move across its surface
Give an example of an organism adapted for diffusion?
PLANTS=ROOT HAIR CELLS= FOR MAX WATER/MINERAL ABSORPTION
Name 3 things which affect the rate of diffusion other than SA;V ratio.
DISTANCE, TEMP,CONC GRADIENT
Explain the role of DISTANCE in diffusion.
THE SHORTER THE DIFFUSION DISTANCE= SHORTER DISTANCE FOR MOLECULES TO TRAVEL
Explain the role of TEMP in diffusion.
The higher the temperature, the more kinetic energy the particles will have, so they will move and mix more quickly
Explain the role of CONC GRADIENT in diffusion.
The greater the difference in concentration, the quicker the rate of diffusion
