Q

what were the 3 focused features of the world
what his conclusion

A
  1. complexity seen biological organisms - eye
  2. regularity - rotationaln and orbits of planets
  3. purpose - universe is complex and regular and must have purpose
as things are complex, regular and purposeful are designed the universe and all within it is designed - designer must be God

Q

what is his 3 caveats

A
  1. if someone has never seen a watch before they would still reach conclusion - uniqueness of universe not a problem
  2. if watch didn’t work still reach conclusion - overcomes natural disaster
  3. if not all part could be explained - reach conclusion - things in nature seem to lack purpose

Q

what is F R Tennant argument

A

anthropic principle
accepts both evolution and existence of God
evolution part of Gods design
Universe is not chaotic but designed so evolution can take place

Q

Swinburne

A

‘The universe might so naturally have been chaotic, but it is not - it is very orderly.’
more probably sheer complexity of the universe is a result of design rather than chance
God is most probable answer

Q

Strengths - 5

A
  1. evil may be parts of Gods intended design
free will defence, process theology, Hicks soul making
  2. inductive - accessible to all
  3. Evolution not a challenge to design - Swinburne depends on certain laws of physics
  4. F R Tennant - how unlikely life on earth is without God
  5. Anthromophic - God is outside universe must be understood analogical with all limitations

Q

Weaknesses - 2

A
  1. inductive arguments can’t lead to proof
  2. evolutions gives false appearance of design due to natural selection. design through natural process

Q

what are Humes challenges - 4

A
  1. a designer needs not to be God of classical theism - the designer need not be perfect since design seems flawed.
why would evil exist - inconsistent triad
John Stuart Mill - ‘either there is no God or there exists an incompetent or immoral God
  2. no evidence for unity of deity - more then one deity
  3. analogy is unsound - shouldn’t compare mechanistic things to universe
shows no good things to compare
  4. concept is anthropomorphism - things within universe and universe itself are different logical spheres.
