1. Biological Molecules - DNA Replication Flashcards
What is the name of the DNA replication that takes place?
Semi-conservative replication.
Which enzymes are used?
- DNA helicase
- DNA polymerase
What is the function of DNA helicase?
It breaks the hydrogen bonds linking the base pairs of DNA, as a result the double helix separates into its two strands and unwinds.
What does each exposed polynucleotide strand act as once the double helix unwinds?
A template, to which complementary free nucleotides bind by specific base pairing.
What is the function of DNA polymerase?
Forms phosphodiester bonds between adjacent nucleotides that have joined together in a condensation reaction onto the exposed DNA strands.
What is the final result of semi-conservative replication?
Two new DNA molecules, each containing one of the original DNA strands
