1. Basic terms Flashcards
Parasitism - ?
Association between 2 orgamisms, one of which lives at the expense of the other. Parasite stays in or on the host in order to obtain food, develop and multiply
Host
individual susceptible to the parasitosis
Final (definitive) host
host in which
the sexual reproduction takes place
Intermediate host
host, in which
only asexual reproduction takes place
Paratenic host
no reproduction (but accumulation, survival)
Vector
organism (usually a blood sucking arthropod) which
plays an active role in transmitting the protozoan parasite
Biological vs. mechanical vector
-
biological, if there is multiplication (development) in it,
and its participation in the life cycle is obligatory - mechanical, when there is only transmission and it plays a facultative role in the life cycle
Reservoir
carrying the infection it provides the source for the infection of
the vector, and/or the host
Homoxenous species
it has one host during its development
Heteroxenous species
it develops in two kinds of participants in its life cycle (excluding paratenic host)
(vector and host, or intermediate and final host)
either obligatorily or facultatively (multichannel development)
Why in case of vector-born protozoa we use vector-host and not final-intermediate hosts
Because sexual reproduction can not be attributed
unanimously to one of the life cycle participants -> it is more appropriate to assign a vector and a host role in the life cycle
