Order of operations
BEDMAS
Brackets Exponentials (powers and roots) Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction
Any number to the power of 0
7⁰=1
Any number to the power of -1
Is equal to 1 divided by the number
I.e. 10⁻¹ = 1/10
Any number to the power of 1
Is equal to itself
I.e. 7¹=7
The nth root
Is denoted as a¹/n and it is the number that when multiplied by itself n times in total results in a.
I.e. 9 = 9¹/₂ = √9 = 3
Powers of powers
(a³)⁴ = a³ˣ⁴ = a¹²
multiplication of powers
a⁴ x a⁵ = a⁴⁺⁵
division of powers
a⁷ ÷ a⁵ = a⁷⁻⁵
quotients
a^n/m can be interpreted as the m^th root of a^n or as the m^th root of a multiplied by itself n times
a^n/m = (m√a)^n = m√(a^n)
Linear equations
y=a+bx
a is where the line cuts the y axis (intercept)
b is the gradient or slope of the line
has no powers
Quadratic equation
has the form
aX^2 x bX + C
has two answers and can be solve with formula
Manipulating inequalities
Are manipulated the same way as equations, except that when multiplying or dividing by a negative number you reverse the sign
