INDICATIONS/USE: doxycycline - monohydrate or hyclate forms
Treatment of: RTI, UTI, STI, acne and skin infections
COUNSELING TIPS: doxycycline - monohydrate or hyclate forms
- sun sensitivity: use sunscreens, avoid tanning beds
- take with food to prevent stomach upset
- do not take food, vitamins, or medication containing Ca++, Fe++, Mg++, or Zn++ within 2 hours before or after doxycycline
- though unlikely, may decrease effectiveness of oral contraceptives; use additional form of birth control during and 1 week after last dose

COUNSELING TIPS: amoxicillin
- though unlikely, may decrease effectiveness of oral contraceptives; use additional form of birth control during and 1 week after last dose
- contraindicated if penicillin allergy
BRAND NAME: cephalexin
Keflex

INDICATIONS/USE: cephalexin
Treatment of: RTI, UTI, ENT, skin and bone infections
COUNSELING TIPS: cephalexin
- do not take vitamins or medication containing Zn++ for at least 3 hours after cephalexin
- contraindicated if cephalosporin allergy
- caution if penicillin allergy
BRAND NAME: azithromycin
Zithromax, Z-Pak, Tri-Pak
COMMON STRENGTHS: azithromycin
250mg, 500mg
COMMON FREQUENCY: azithromycin
Z-pak: 2 250mg tablets PO on day 1, then 1 tab days 2-5, q24h
INDICATIONS/USE: azithromycin
Treatment of: RTI, STI, ENT, skin and acne infections
COUNSELING TIPS: azithromycin
- do not take with an Al++ or Mg++ containing antacid
- QTc prolongation occurs rarely, but possible interaction with many different medications
- contraindicated if macrolide allergy
BRAND NAME: ciprofloxacin
Cipro, Ciloxan

INDICATIONS/USE: ciprofloxacin
Treatment of: STI, prostatitis, skin, bone, pneumonia, complicated UTI, RTI, abdominal infections
COUNSELING TIPS: ciprofloxacin
- QTc prolongation occurs rarely, but possible interaction with many different medications
- do not take food or medications containing Ca++, Fe++ within 2 hours before or after ciprofloxacin
- sun sensitivity: use sunscreens, avoid tanning beds
- may increase caffeine sensitivity
- contraindicated if fluoroquinolone allergy
BRAND NAME: sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP)

Treatment of: RTI, UTI, HIV-associated infections
COUNSELING TIPS: sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP)
- sun-sensitivity: use sunscreens, avoid tanning beds
- take with at least 8 oz. water
- contraindicated if sulfa allergy

Treatment of UTI
COUNSELING TIPS: nitrofurantoin
- orange or brown urine is expected and not cause for concern
- do not take food or medications containing Mg++ within 2 hours before or after nitrofurantoin
- take with food/milk to increase absorption
BRAND NAME: metronidazole
Flagyl
COMMON STRENGTHS: metronidazole
250mg, 500mg
COMMON FREQUENCY: metronidazole
q6h, q8h, q12h
INDICATIONS/USE: metronidazole
Treatment of: abscess, vaginosis, GI tract infections, STI
COUNSELING TIPS: metronidazole
- contraindicated: alcohol use during therapy and for 3 days after last dose
- metallic taste in mouth
- headache common adverse effect
BRAND NAME: fluconazole
Diflucan
COMMON STRENGTHS: fluconazole
100mg, 150mg, 200mg
COMMON FREQUENCY: fluconazole
q24h, single dose for vaginosis
INDICATIONS/USE: fluconazole
Treatment fungal infections of: mouth (thrush), skin, vagina, HIV-associated
COUNSELING TIPS: fluconazole
- QTc prolongation occurs rarely, but possible interaction with many different medications
- report any new skin rash to the prescriber
BRAND NAME: valacyclovir
Valtrex
COMMON STRENGTHS: valacyclovir

INDICATIONS/USE: valacyclovir
Treats herpes viral infections of: genitals, cold sores, shingles
COUNSELING TIPS: valacyclovir
- headache common adverse effect
- does not prevent disease transmission [avoid sex when sores are present]
- drink lots of fluids to prevent accumulation in kidneys
