1 + 2 (1st) Flashcards
What is radiation?
the release (emission) and transfer (propagation) of energy (in the form of waves or particles)
radiation process
Source - Radiation - Irradiated target
3 factors that may occur when radiation interacts with a matter, causing the intensity to decrease
Energy absorption, reflection and dispersion
What is attenuation law?
the intensity of radiation
- changes proportionally to the incident intensity
- decreases exponentially with the thickness of layer
What does the validity of the attenuation law depend on?
Interaction between matter and radiation
What is differential form of attenuation law? Give formula
It describes the decrease in intensity of the radiation is proportional to the thickness of the absorber (∆x) and the initial intensity (J)
∆J/∆x = -µ*J
What is integral form of attenuation law? Give formula
It describes the decrease in intensity of the radiation form as a function of layer thickness
J = Jo * e^(-µx)
What is the attenuation coefficient?
the inverse of the distance that reduces the intensity by a factor of 1/e
classifications of radiation
