Q

Diesel Engines

A
  • reciprocating internal combustion engine
  • recirpocating movement of the pistons within the liners are converted into rotary motion
  • Internal combustion=compressed air + fuel
  • consume less fuel and more efficient than steam turbine
  • 100rpm
  • Two stroke engine
  • directly connected to propeller

Q

Steam Turbine

A
  • Rotary Machine
  • high pressure steam to turn turbine
  • steam provided by boilers
  • turns at very high speed (10,000-12,000 rpm)
  • not directly connected to propeller
  • require reduction gear
  • VLCC, LNG ships

Q

Gas Turbine

A
  • rotary engine, similar to steam
  • Compressor, combustion chamber, turbine
  • Compressor: provides compressed air which is then heated up
  • Combustion chamber: compressed air + gas
  • Increase efficiency by using heat from exhaust
  • Connected to propeller using reduction gear

Q

Diesel Electric Propulsion

A
  1. connected to electrical generator creating electricity to power electric motors
  2. electric motor drives propeller shaft that turn propeller to move the ship
  3. Cruise ship
