#1 Flashcards
Lycoming 0-320-E2D synopsis
- 4 Stroke engine
- 2700RPM and 150HP @ Sea Level and Standard temp
- 4 Cylinder, “Normally” Aspirated engine
- 8 Spark Plugs (2 Spark Plugs per cylinder)
- 2 Magnetos to provide redundancy and increased efficiency (fire)
- Carburetor (air), Carb icing 20-70F, Drop in RPM is a indication of carburetor icing
What makes a engine run
Fuel, Fire, Air
Cessna 172M Propeller
Fixed Pitched Climb Propeller
Intake
Piston moves away from cylinder head and draws in fuel/air mixture through intake manifold and intake valve
Compression
Both valves close and piston head moves towards the top of the cylinder (top dead center) and compresses fuel/air mixture
Ignition
Top and Bottom spark plugs let off a spark and ignite the fuel/air mixture causing a controlled ignition, pushing the piston head towards the base of the cylinder which the crankshaft and therefore the propeller
Exhaust
The exhaust valve opens and the cylinder head moves back towards the top of the cylinder, pushing out the exhaust gases
Camshaft
Rotates in unison with the crankshaft (with gears) in order to open and close intake valves at the precise time needed. This process is repeated thousands of time a minute
Crankshaft
Rotated by pistons operating at different strokes and in turn rotating the propeller which is connected to the crankshaft
Cylinder Stroke
Each cylinder is on a different stroke with one piston always being on power stroke
