07 - miscellaneous diseases of bone Flashcards
1
Q
(panosteitis)
- affect young large breed dogs
- what breed gets alot?
- causes include stress, vasc abnormalities, metabolic disorders, allergies
- see degeneration of medullary adipocytes
A
- german shephard
2
Q
(panosteitis)
- usually occurs up to 1 year of age
- males or females affected more?
- Cx?
A
- males (4:1)
- acute weight bearing lameness with no history of trauma. Cx continue for several months and resolve by about 18 months of age.
3
Q
(panosteitis)
(dx)
- pain from palpation
- radiographs
A
4
Q
(panosteitis)
(tx)
- self-limiting, administer NSAIDs and restirct exercise
A
5
Q
(HOD)
- cause unknown - NOT vit C
- usually occurs in what dogs?
- signs start when?
- Cx?
A
- young, rapidly growing large and giant breed dogs
- 3 to 4 months of age
- bilateral lameness
(anorexia, fever, depression if severe)
6
Q
(HOD)
(dx)
- often based on history and physical examination
- radiographs show generalized sclerosis and enlargement of what?
A
- metaphysis (parallel lines!)
7
Q
(HOD)
(tx)
- if mild, regression is often spontaneous
- decreaseing caloric intake may help
- if severe, may need feeding tube
- give NSAIds as needed
A
8
Q
(hypertrophic osteopathy HO)
- occurs secondary to other dz - usually what?
- path unknown - may related to what though?
A
- metastatic pulmonary neoplasia
- ^ peripheral vascular supply
9
Q
(HO)
- any breed/age of dog/cat can be affected
- more in females and large breed dogs cause of mammary tumors and pirmary bone tumors in large
A
10
Q
(HO)
(dx)
- distal limbs are swollen, warm, painful
- radio - symmetric periosteal rxn, start distal
A
11
Q
(HO)
- if pfimary cause resolves - will lesions regress?
- tx?
A
- yeppers
- address 1° cause
(vagotomy may help if primary mass can’t be removed)
12
Q
(craniomandibular osteopathy)
- what is this?
- probably heritable
A
- osteoclastic resorption of mandibular bone, followed by production of woven bone
(can also happen in occiptial bones or temporal bones)
13
Q
(craniomandibular osteopathy)
(dx)
- pain when open mouth
- radio - bilateral bony proliferation
A
14
Q
(craniomandibular osteopahy)
- bone stops growing at what age?
- will lesions regress?
- prog is poor if what has occured?
A
- 1 year
- possibly
- fusion of TMJ joint
15
Q
(craniomandibular osteopathy)
- tx?
A
- support, NSAIDs
sx doesn’t work well
