[06] Cardiac Cycle Flashcards
What are the main phases of the cardiac cycle?
- Diastole
- Systole
What is diastole?
Relaxation phase where the heart fills with blood
What is systole?
Contraction phase where the heart pumps blood out
What happens during the atrial systole?
Atria contract and blood is pushed into the ventricles
What happens during the ventricular systole?
Ventricles contract and blood is pumped out of the heart
What happens during the atrial diastole?
Atria relax and fill with blood returning to the heart
What happens during the ventricular diastole?
Ventricles relax and fill with blood passed down from the atria
What is the period called between the start of one heartbeat and the start of the next?
Cardiac cycle
What is the normal heart rate for adults at rest?
60 to 100 beats per minute
What controls the heart rate?
Autonomic nervous system
What part of the brain controls the autonomic nervous system?
Medulla oblongata
What hormone can increase the heart rate?
Adrenaline
What part of the autonomic nervous system increases heart rate?
Sympathetic nervous system
What part of the autonomic nervous system decreases heart rate?
Parasympathetic nervous system
What is the sequence of electrical conduction in the heart?
- Sinoatrial node (SA node)
- Atrioventricular node (AV node)
- Bundle of His
- Right and left bundle branches
- Purkinje fibers
