[01] Overview of Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the main components of the cardiovascular system?
- Heart
- Blood vessels
- Blood
What are the three types of blood vessels?
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
What is the primary function of the cardiovascular system?
To circulate blood, providing oxygen and nutrients to tissues, and removing waste products
What role do arteries play in the cardiovascular system?
They carry blood away from the heart
What role do veins play in the cardiovascular system?
They carry blood towards the heart
What role do capillaries play in the cardiovascular system?
They allow exchange of nutrients, waste products, and gases between blood and tissues
How does the heart function in the cardiovascular system?
It pumps blood to circulate it throughout the body
What are the four chambers of the heart?
- Right atrium
- Right ventricle
- Left atrium
- Left ventricle
How does blood flow through the heart?
From the body to the right atrium, to the right ventricle, to the lungs, then back to the left atrium, left ventricle, and out to the body
What is the role of the right side of the heart?
It pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What is the role of the left side of the heart?
It pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
What is the function of red blood cells?
They carry oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues and take away waste carbon dioxide
What is the function of white blood cells?
They help fight infections and aid in the immune process
What is the function of platelets?
They help in blood clotting
What is the function of plasma in the cardiovascular system?
It carries cells, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body
