05.2 Upper motor Neurones and Descending Tracts Flashcards
What can the descending motor pathways be split into?
Pyramidal (voluntary)
Extrapyramidal (involuntary)
Are most descending motor neurones stimulatory or inhibitory?
Inhibitory
What can pyramidal tracts be split into?
Corticospinal
Corticobulbar - Synapse onto cranial nerve nuclei
Do corticospinal tracts decussate?
Yes
Do corticobulbar tracts decussate?
Yes, some fibres do.
Facial nerve below the eyes and hypoglossal nerve are contralateral entirely.
All other cranial nerves have bilateral innervation.
What are the extrapyramidal tracts?
Vestibulospinal
Reticulospinal
Rubrospinal
Tectospinal
What does the vestibulospinal tract do?
Balance
Does not decussate
What does the reticulospinal tract do?
Locomotion movement coordination
Bilateral innervation
What does the rubrospinal tract do?
Facilitates flexor tone
Contralateral innervation
What does the tectospinal tract do?
Directs head movements towards light and sound
Contralateral innervation
