03.2 Ascending Pathways Flashcards
What modalities does the dorsal column medial lemniscus pathway carry?
Fine touch
Proprioception
Vibration
Where do the neurones of the dorsal column medial lemniscus pathway decussate?
At the medulla - Above T6 at the cuneate nucleus
Below T6 at the Gacile nucleus
Where do the 3rd order neurones begin in the dorsal column medial lemniscus pathway?
Thalamus
In the dorsal column medial lemniscus pathway which fibres are the most lateral and medial?
Cervical are the most lateral
Sacral are the most medial
What are the modalities carried by the spinothalamic pathway?
Crude touch and pressure (anterior)
Pain and temperature (lateral)
Where do the neurones decussate?
At their spinal level
In the spinothalamic pathway which fibres are the most lateral and medial?
Cervical are the most medial
Sacral are the most lateral
What modalities do the spinocerebellar tracts carry?
Unconscious proprioception of muscles o the cerebellum
Do the fibres of the spinocerebellar tracts decussate?
There is no net dessucation in any of the tracts
the anterior tract does decussate and does so twice
What can cause loss of the dorsal column medial lemniscus pathway?
B12 deficiency Tabes dorsalis (seen in neurosiphillis)
What is lost in a spinal cord lesion of the DCLM pathway?
Ispilateral loss of fine touch, vibration, proprioception
What is lost in a spinal cord lesion of the spinothalamic pathway?
Contralateral loss of Crude touch, pressure, pain and temperature
What is lost in a Brown Sequard lesion?
Ipsilateral loss of DCLM
Contralateral loss of spinothalamic pathway
Ipsilateral loss of motor function
