04.1 Neural Basis of Pain Flashcards

Q

Why does rubbing a painful area help stop the pain?

A

Mechanoreceptors on the skin activate the substantia gelatinosa (of the second lamina of the dorsal horn). This then inhibits the ascending pain pathways.

Q

What is the descending inhibitory pathway of pain?

A

Fibres from the pariaqueductal grey in the midbrain active pathways in the reticular formation which activate the substantia gelatinosa which inhibits pain pathways. The PAG neurones are sensitive to opioids.
