04.1 Neural Basis of Pain Flashcards
What are the two types of nociceptive fibre?
A delta fibres - myelinated (sharp pain)
C fibres - unmyelinated (dull pain)
Why does rubbing a painful area help stop the pain?
Mechanoreceptors on the skin activate the substantia gelatinosa (of the second lamina of the dorsal horn). This then inhibits the ascending pain pathways.
What is the descending inhibitory pathway of pain?
Fibres from the pariaqueductal grey in the midbrain active pathways in the reticular formation which activate the substantia gelatinosa which inhibits pain pathways. The PAG neurones are sensitive to opioids.
What are some weak opiates?
Codeine
Tramadol
What are some strong opiates?
Morphine
Diamorphine
Oxycodeine
Fentanyl
What are some adjuvant analgesics?
NSAIDs
Paracetamol
Cannabis
Ketamine
