Development
Gradual changes in physical, social, emotional and intellectual states and abilities.
Physical Development
Changes that occur to the body and it’s systems.
Physical development examples
- motor skill development (gross and fine)
- growth e.g. taller
- increased complexity of organs e.g. prenatal lung development, ovaries releasing eggs at puberty
- declining body systems e.g. brittle bones
- teeth loss and eruption
Social Development
Changes in the ability to interact with others.
Examples of social development
- conflict resolution skills
- social roles e.g. interaction with teacher vs. friend
- communication skills
- body language
- eye contact
- manners
Intellectual Development
Changes in the way the brain is able to think and reason.
Examples of intellectual development
- improving attention and memory
- acquiring new knowledge and vocabulary
- developing reasoning
- learning to problem solve
- increasing imagination and creativity
Emotional Development
Learning to understand, control and express feelings and emotions appropriately.
Examples of emotional development
- self-concept
- self awareness of emotions
- management of emotions e.g. regulating anger
- expressing feelings appropriately e.g. disappointment
Motor skills
The control of muscles within the body to produce movement
Gross motor skills
Large movements by large muscle groups
Fine motor skills
Small movements by small muscle groups
Example of gross motor skill
- kicking a ball
- walking
- throwing
Example of fine motor skill
- writing
- tying shoelaces
- using scissors
