01 What is HCI Flashcards
With what 3 things is HCI concerned?
design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive
computing systems for human use
Crucial parts of HCI (4 things, 2x develope)?
▪ Developing good user interfaces
▪ Understanding what are successful ways of interaction, and why they are successful
▪ Evaluating the quality of a user interface, find ways to improve it
▪ Developing new ways of interaction (new principles, new technologies)
What is a User Interface?
Part of an application or interactive system that enables the user to interact with the computer (input) and the computer to communicate to the user (output)
Realized in Software and Hardware
Hardware Input and Output Devices
Mouse, Controller, Graphic-Board, Microphone, Joystick, Screen
Types of User Interfaces
classical computers, mobile interfaces, wearables,
individual users vs. collaborative systems,
everyday user vs. specific user,
productive vs highly emotional
What makes a good UI?
High degree of usability and
Good user experience
What is usability?
The extent to which a product can be used
by specified users to achieve specified goals in a specified context of use
with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction
What is usability centered on?
Ease of use, learnability of system
Is usability more subjective of objective?
Objective, can be evaluated in quantitive tests
Design Goals: Usability Goals
Effective Efficient Safe Good Utility Easy to learn Easy to remember
What does “effective to use” mean?
Being able to perform tasks accurately and right
What does “efficient to use” mean?
High level of productivity
What does “safe to use” mean?
Small range of errors, recover easily from errors
What does “good utility” mean?
Appropriate set of functions
What does UX mean?
User’s emotions and attitudes about using a product
