01 - Navigation Principles Flashcards
1
Q
Latitude
A
Expressed in 2 digits
- Angular distance North or South from the equator (0º-90º)
2
Q
Longitude
A
Expressed in 3 digits
- Angular distance East or West from the Prime Meridian (0º-180º)
3
Q
Great Circle
A
Circle formed on the surface of the earth that passes trhough the center of the earth.
4
Q
Small Circle
A
Any circle on the surface of the earth not passing through the center of the earth
5
Q
Great Circle Route
A
Shortest distance between two points (follows a great circle)
- Not practical because it would require constant course changes
6
Q
Rhumb Line
A
A line that starts at point A and ends at point B
- Helps establish a true heading without constant change
- Longer route
7
Q
Composite Track
A
Combines Great Circle Route and Rhumb Line to utilize waypoints to maximize time and distance.
8
Q
Advantages of Mercator Projections
A
(Most commonly used chart)
- Rhumb lines, Meridians and parallels are represented by straight lines
- Meridians and parallels are perpendicular to each other, simplifying plotting projections
9
Q
Disadvantages of Mercator Projections
A
- High distortion in extreme latitudes (~60º)
- Great-Circle distances and directions are not readily determinate
10
Q
Types of Projections
A
- Plane
- Cylindrical
- Conic

Q
Nautical Chart Agencies
A
- National Ocean Service Corps (NOS)
- Army Corp of Engineers
- National Geospatial Intelligence Agency
