01-01-02 The Chromatic Scale Flashcards
Where is the note C on a keyboard?
Always to the left of a group of two black keys.
Explain a half step
A half step is the distance from one piano key to the next closes (Whether it happens to be white or black).
What are natural half steps and list them
Half steps where the notes do not use accidentals. B to C and E to F are natural half steps
Explain accidentals
Accidentals are signs that modify the pitch of a note.
Explain a flat
Where a note is flattened by a semitone. E.g. A to Ab
Explain a natural
Cancels out other accidentals and returns the note to its natural state. E.g. A# to A
Explain a sharp
Where a note is sharpened by a semitone. E.g. A to A#
Explain enharmonic notes
Notes that have two different letter names. E.g. C# and Db are enharmonic to each other.
Explain a double flat
Lowers a flat note by another semitone, keeping the same letter name. E.g. Ab to Abb
Explain a double sharp
Sharpens a sharped note by another semitone, keeping the same letter name. E.g. A# to A##
Explain a whole step
A whole step is two half steps together. E.g. C - D
Explain a scale
A series of notes from low to high following some pattern of whole steps and half steps.
Explain the chromatic scale
A chromatic scale lists all the notes in order from a note to the same note an octave lower or higher.
