zulu healers Flashcards
• Why would it be hard for the medical doctor to learn how to be a traditional healer (~12:20-14:00)? Briefly describe how the traditional healer became Sangoma.
o To be a traditional healer you need to be able to be born with the spirits – cant be passed down with knowledge
o the healer became sangoma after getting sick – headaches, nose bleeds – they could not diagnose her illness. Then someone contacted the spirits and told them she was inhabited, needed to be the sangoma. The spirits saved her, and she was asked to help treat patients
• Briefly describe how the WHO is collaborating with traditional Zulu healers (Sangoma) in the campaign against AIDS (~16:54-21:55). How does the traditional healer facilitate patients needs (and concerns about the hospital)? Sum up what the traditional healer was taught about HIV/AIDS.
- They are recognizing and including traditional healers in care – collab with biomedical doctors to better reach and educate their communities
- Received training to recognize early symptoms of AIDS and has arguments to help her patients overcome concerns about the hospital
- She was taught how to put on a condom, to not be afraid to touch patients, care for them, and let them be a part of the community
