Define the term zoonosis
A disease which can be transmitted between living (vertebrate) animals and humans
What is the epidemiology of zonooses diseases?
- Most modern infectious diseases originated in animals
- 61% of the pathogens that currently affect humans are thought to be zoonotic
What are the clinical features of brucellosis?
- Incubation period of 5-30 days
Subclinical (most common presentation)
- +ve serology
What are the clinical features of Lyme Disease?
- Multi-system involvement
- Expanding rash at site of tick bite (erythema migrans)
- Flu-like symptoms
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Fever
- Neck stiffness
What are the clinical features of leptospirosis?
- Flu like symptoms
- Myalgia
- Headaches
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice
- Acute Kidney Injury

What are the long-term sequelae of Lyme Disease?
- Acrodermatitis Chronica Atroficans
- Lyme encephalopathy
- Chronic encephalomyelitis
- Facial palsy
- Cardiac disorders
How is Brucellosis diagnosed and treated?
Diagnosis - Blood culture
Treatment - Doxycycline + Rifampicin
How is Lyme disease diagnosed and treated?
Diagnosis - Clinical features (erythema migrans), Serological testing and other lab tests
Treatment - Antibitoics
How is Leptospirosis diagnosed and treated?
Diagnosis - High Index of suspicion
Treatment:
- Doxycycline (mild)
- IV Penicilin (severe)
- Dialysis
- Mechanical Ventilation
