What did the study investigate
If people conformed to social roles
What did the study find?
Guards used their authority and prisoners resisted by sticking together
Then prisoners became more passive and obedient and guards invented nastier punishments
What ethical issues were there?
Starved and distressed
Guards felt guilt and embarrassment
didn’t have the right to withdraw - were told to sleep on it
evaluate the validity due to demand characteristics
Students would have heard of Zimbardo and would be impressed by his status, so would want to produce results he would like
How did investigator bias effect the study
Zimbardo placed himself in the study as super intendent and he wanted results that proved his hypothesis
Evaluate zimbardos sample
Male - androcentric
Students - low ecological validity
Volunteer - only people who read the newspaper but also would produce motivated people
Incentive - people stayed for the money
