What is social support? How did Milgram and Asch investigate this?
People are less likely to conform/obey when they have someone to help their refusal
Asch - added dissenter who always disagree with majority- 32% to 5.5%
Milgram - added actors who refused to carry on. 68% to 10%
What is locus of control?
Internal - what happens to them is a result of their own behaviour
External - what happens to them is a result of external factors

ILOC were less likely to conform to group

How does commitment effect minority influence?
If minority makes sacrifices, their opinion must be right so more people will listen - eg rosa parks
How does flexibility effect minority influence and how was it investigated?
If they are dogmatic they won’t be listened to
Nemeth- groups of 3 participants and one actor to decide on compensation for ski lift accident
When the actor wasn’t flexible they had no effect but when they were flexible, they decreased the amount
How does group membership effect minority influence
If the message comes from a group you identity with as being positive, then they will be listened to - informational social influence
What is the snowball effect
One the message has gathered people through information social influence, it will become more popular and more followers will join due to normative social influence
