Zang Fu: Spleen and Stomach Flashcards
Common symptoms associated with stomach
epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, hiccups, belching
Common symptoms associated with Spleen
poor appetite, abdominal distension and pain, loose stools, diarrhea, edema, lassitude and hemorrhage
Etiology and pathology of Deficiency of Spleen Qi
Improper diet, overstrain and stress, prolonged illness leading to the impairment of Spleen QI -> hypofunction of transportation and transformation
Manifestations: loss of appetite, abdominal distention that is especially worse after eating, loose stools, or loose stools after dry stools, lassitude, emaciation, SOB, disinclination to speak, pallor and edema, sallow complexion, pale tongue, white coating, weak and retarded pulse
Deficiency of Spleen QI
Etiology and pathology of Deficiency of Spleen Yang
Spleen Qi Deficiency, eat cold foods impairs yang, kidney yang deficiency fails to promote earth therefore leading to Spleen Yang Deficiency
abdominal distention, loss of appetite, abdominal pain which can be relieved by warmth or pressing, loose stools, and cold limbs or heaviness of the limbs, general edema, difficult urination, profuse dilute leucorrhea, pale and puffy tongue, white and slippery coating, deep, slow and weak pulse
Deficiency of spleen yang
Etiology and pathology of Failure of the spleen in controlling blood
Chronic illness, overstrain, improper diet –> damage spleen Qi –> spleen unable to control the blood
bloody stools, hematuria, hematohidrosis, menorrhagia (excessive menstrual blood), metrorrhagia and metrostaxis - bleeding out of period, poor appetite, loose stools, lassitude, weakness, SOB, disinclination to speak, pallor, pale tongue, white coating, thready and weak pulse
Failure of spleen in controlling blood
Etiology and pathology of Disturbance of the spleen by cold damp
improper diet, excessive intake of cold food ->retention of cold damp interior
wading in water or living in damp places-> dampness penetrates into body from outside
both leads to the retention of the spleen by cold damp
->obstruction of Qi
->disorder of spleen and stomach
Manifestation: fullness and distending pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, loss of appetite, loose stools and diarrhea, nausea, tasteless mouth, absence of thirst, heaviness of the head and body, and sallow complexion, icteric skin and eyes that are dark yellow if having been smoked, edema, scanty urine, pale and puffy tongue, white and slippery coating, soft and retarded pulse
Disturbance of the spleen by cold damp
Etiology and pathology of damp heat in the spleen
- invasion of exogenous pathogenic damp heat -> obstruct the spleen and stomach
- damp heat stagnates in middle jiao -> affects the liver and gallbladder
manifestations: fullness in the abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea, loose stools, yellow scanty urine, heaviness of the body and limbs, or icteric skin, eyes fresh bright colour like oranges, and itching, rising and falling fever which cannot be relieved after sweating, yellow and sticky coating, and soft and rapid pulse
Retention of damp heat in Spleen
Etiology and pathology of stomach Yin
prolonged stomach disease
consumption of yin by febrile disease
indulgence on hot and dry food/drugs
emotion frustration ->fire->Yin
all leads to Stomach Yin deficiency
leads to failure to nourish
upflow of stomach Qi
Dull pain in the epigastrium, anorexia, dryness in the mouth and throat, constipation, or fullness in the epigastrium, retching hiccups, red tongue with little coating, thready and rapid pulse
Deficiency of Stomach Yin
Distension, fullness and pain the epigastrium and abdomen, foul belching, sour regurgitation, anorexia, vomiting, hesitant bowel movement, thick and sticky tongue coating, rolling pulse
Retention of food in stomach
