What is Zakah/Zakat?
Requires Muslims to give 2.5% of their savings to charity every year. Muslims believe Zakah helps them purify their souls by removing selfishness and greed.
What is Khums?
A 20% tax paid by Shi’a Muslims. Half goes to a religious leader and half goes to charity.
What is Sadaqah?
A voluntary charitable payment that Muslims can also make.
What is a quote for Khums?
‘Alms are meant only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause and travellers in need.’ Qur’an 9:60
What is nisab?
The amount of savings that a Muslim must have in order to be required to give Zakah
What is a quote about giving to charity?
‘Whatever you give should be for your parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travellers. God is well aware of whatever good you do.’ Qur’an 2:215
Who is Zakah given to?
A charity like Islamic Relief / Muslim Aid or collected by a Mosque + distributed to those in need
Why is Zakah important?
Fulfilling a duty to God, strengthening Muslim community, encourages Muslims to have a good attitude towards money and a purification that helps Muslims become closer to God.
