What are the Five Pillars?
Five most important duties, fundamental practices and key to living a Muslim life. They are Shahadah, Salah, Zakah, Sawm, Hajj.
What is Shahada?
Shahadah is the declaration of faith. Expresses the core beliefs of Islam and provides the foundation for the other 4 pillars.
What phrase is recited as the Shahadah? (Sunni)
‘There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger’
What phrase is recited as the Shahadah for Shi’a Muslims?
‘There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger and Ali is the friend of God’
Why is the Shi’a Shahadah different to the Sunni one?
Because Shi’a Muslims believe Ali was the true successor to Muhammad.
When do Muslims say the Shahadah?
At birth, when the become a Muslim (sincerely recites in front of Muslim witnesses) and if possible, at death.

What are Khums?
20% tax (half to charity and half to a religious leader)
What is Jihad?
The struggle to maintain the faith and defend Islam.
What is Amr-bil-Maruf?
Encouraging people to do what is good
What is Nahi Anil Munkar?
Discouraging people from doing what is wrong
What is Tawallah?
Showing love for God and the people who follow him
What is Tabarra?
Not associating with the enemies of God
