Modularity and heterogeneity are two characteristics related to smart manufacturing systems. What do they mean?
Modularity - being able to configure sub-components to form different system configurations to solve unique engineering problems
Heterogeneity - Smart manufacturing deals with manufacturing problems in the entire value chain, which consists of diverse manufacturing systems and processes
Interoperability and self-organisation are two characteristics related to smart manufacturing systems. What do they mean?
Interoperability - Smart manufacturing can exchange and share information between heterogeneous systems, processes, and products via common data models and interfaces.
Self-organisation - Participants (e.g., systems, processes and people) can communicate with each other and coordinate their actions in a purposeful matter without external involvement
