yuki's study Flashcards
aim
-investigate if culture affects how facial cues are used when understanding other people’s emotions
study design
method
- showed participants emotions with six different six different combinations of eyes and mouths
- eyes and mouths were either happy, sad or neutral
- they were then asked how happy the face was
results
- japanese had higher ratings for faces with happy eyes and lowest ratings with faces with sad eyes
- americans had higher ratings for faces with happy mouths
- JAPANESE FOCUSED MORE ON EYES RATHER THAN MOUTHS, this suggests a difference in their understanding of facial expressions
conclusion
-people learn their own cultural norms on expression and interpretation of emotions
strengths and weaknesses
strengths
-provides support that NVC is learned to some extent
-when yuki used photos of real people instead, results were still the same
weaknesses
-USED EMOTICONS INSTEAD OF PEOPLE, lacks ecological validity
-participants were aware they were taking part, demand characteristics
-sample was limited, consisted of only students, can’t be generalised to other ages
-only looked at basic emotions of happiness and sadness, findings cannot be generalised to other facial expressions and other emotions
