Yr9 Chemistry-Bonding Flashcards
What are covalent bonds?
Where two non-metals react with each other and have at least one shared pair of electrons.
Why do simple covalent bonds have low melting and boiling points?
The molecules in a simple covalent bonds have a weak attraction to each other and not as much thermal; energy is needed to overcome them.
What are ionic bonds?
Ionic bonds are formed between a metal and a non-metal where they exchange and electron and the positive and negative charges attract each other.
If an atom loses an electron then what ion does it form?
Positive
If an atom gains an electron then what ion does it form?
Negative
What happens to the electron in covalent bonds?
It is shared
What happens to the electron in ionic bonds?
It is transferred
What happens to the electron in metallic bonds?
It is delocalised
What are ionic bonds formed from?
