Yr9 Biology-Digestive System Flashcards
Revise about the digestive system
Name 4 parts of the digestive system
Mouth Salivary Glands Osophagus Stomach Small Intestine Large Intestine Pancreas Liver Rectum Anus
What is used to break down food?
Enzymes
What enzymes break down:
Starch?
Lipids?
Protein?
Starch = Amylase Lipids = Lipase Protein = Protease
What does the Mouth do?
The mouth mechanically breaks down food using saliva into smaller pieces for the other parts of the digestive system.
`What does the Oesophagus do?
The Oesophagus in a muscular tube which transports the food that has been chewed up by the mouth to the stomach.
What does the stomach do?
The stomach breaks down food so nutrients and water can be absorbed in later parts of the digestive system
What does the Liver do?
The liver processes blood that has nutrients that are in it and produces bile.
What does the gall bladder do?
The gallbladder holds bile that is produced by the liver.
What does the pancreas do?
The pancreas creates enzymes that are used for digestion.
What does the small intestine do?
The small intestine absorbs nutrients into the bloodstream.
What does the large intestine do?
The large intestine absorbs water from the food
What does the rectum do?
The rectum holds waste until it needs to be released.
What does the anus do?
The anus pushes waste out of the body.
What is the place where the substrate go into on an enzyme called?
Active site
What is the process of the substrate fitting into the enzyme called?
Lock and Key model
