YR 9 - Electricity Flashcards
what is current?
current is the flow of charge round a circuit.
what is potential difference?
potential difference is the difference in electrical potential between two points in a circuit.
what can increasing the potential difference of a supply do?
increasing the potential difference of a supply causes increase in flow of current.
what is resistance?
resistance opposes the flow of current.
what does increasing resistance do?
increasing resistance decreases current.
what is current measured with?
current is measured with an ammeter connected in series
what is potential difference measured with?
potential difference is measured with a voltmeter connected in parallel.
how is resistance measured?
resistance is not usually measured directly it is calculated.
what must there be in order for current to flow?
in order for current to flow there must be a compete circuit and a potential difference.
what is a series circuit?
series circuits are ones which contain only one ring (excluding voltmeters).
what happens to the current in a series circuit?
the current remains the same in a series circuit where ever it is measured.
how do you increase the resistance in a series circuit?
increasing the number of components in a series increases the resistance, lowering the current.
what happens to the potential difference in a series?
the potential difference of a supply is shared by the components in the series circuit.
what is a parallel circuit
a parallel circuit is a circuit with more than one route (branches).
what happens to the current in a parallel?
the total current is divided between the branches.
