Younger vs older generation Flashcards
Why does Priestley present the older and younger generation.
Priestley contrasts the elder and younger generation to highlight the division of the the YOUNGER characters who accept responsibility and create a sense of hope that they will adopt socialist ideologies and states where as priestly showcases the Older generation to be much more stubborn and cemented capitalist views and actions.
who represents the younger generation and who represents the older generation
Eric and sheila
Mr Birling and Mrs Birling
what are the divides in each of their characters
Eva and Eric begin to feel remorse of their actions - become consumed with guilt
Where as Mrs Birling and Mr Birling despite what happened to Eva - as a result of their actions- remain un phased and unapologetic - still concerned with their own desires
quotes that show the younger generation feels remorse - sheila
'’sheila- I behaved badly … I’m ashamed of it’’
Stage directions- As if she’s been crying.
She is taking accountability for her ratios shows that she has developed just over the course of a few hours into a more remorseful person and she feels a lot of guilt. highlight hat she may later transform , convert into a more responsible, socialist and loving person than who she used to be. Gives hope for the future as if she can change so much right in a short space of time, surely she will have an even more impactful change over a longer period of time.
declarative sentence suggests Sheila is taking ownership over her actions indicating in the future she will be more continue and positively intentional about her actions.
Preistley shows sheila to be emblematic of change and hope for the future and as she changes through the play from a girl who was ‘’ very pleased with her life’’ suggesting she is smug and self centerer, also that she in unaware of the suffering of the Lower class as she is clearly careless and content with her actions which are not benefiting of improving the less fortunates situation but only her own as she is please with her life. by this she implies that she is ‘pleased’ with what is going on around her highlighting her lack of sympathy and awareness as the adjective pleased suggests so.
This could also imply sheila is only selfishly focused on her life and may even be trying to erase what is going on around her as part of her life or responsibility and she makes no attempt to mention the lives of others around her but only herself as the utilisation for the possessive pronoun ‘‘my’’ hints this, however sheila changes into a more ‘‘sorry ‘’ person highlighting how how much of a drastic transformation sheila had gone through. sheila represents Priestleys audience who are encouraged to change for the better and unexpectedly/ ironically use sheila as a role model.
past tense verb ‘‘behaved’’ implies Sheila is leaving her past behind and has no intention of allowing her past self entered, oblivious nature to perpetuate into her future life.
This massively contrasts/ juxtaposes with we parents - who are part of the older generations- proud ‘ hard headed’ arrogant characteristics highlighting the difference in the older and younger generation
Priestley presents encourages change and presents hope and transformation into a better person as something that can be achieved and should be achieved, As if the direct offspring of proud and selfish people can change - despite being ‘‘comfortable’’ and secure in their lives, ultimately sheltered for the disasters of the world - surely everyone and anyone is capable of change.
The ellipsis highlights that he Character is incomplete and there is much more kindness to come from her. This implies that she still has a lot to prove and her intentions are to fulfil her positive and loving aims. Priestley almost illustrated his goals and aims through the character development of sheila.
what does these facts show about the older and younger generation
the younger generation are more impressionable and mouldable - hints to change in the future. Priestley wants to highlight to his younger audience that they have the chance to change for the better, they are capable of making the world a Peter place, they have the power to shift societies so called norms.
The older generation are outdated, the older generation traditional views are what is keeping the world firm going and evolving for the better.
quote about the younger generation differing the older - Eric
’ you lot may be letting yourself out nicely but I can’t. ‘’ ‘‘we did her in alright’
quite confrontational - he is is taking responsibility and are even getting frustrated d as his parents for not realising the massive deal and result of their actions.
quote about older generation- Mr Birling
‘I can’t accept any responsibility’
- egotistical and prideful man
’ can’t ‘ it will threaten what he stands for - which are his capitalist views- mirroring the older generations lack of want to change and highlight the probability that they will not change.
Mr Birling cares more about his status. insecure and materialistic
'’I told him quite plainly I though I don’t noting wrong ‘’
Shelia ! what and expression !really, the things you girls pick up these days!
