Q

irony of mr birling

A

Ironic as Mr Birling wants to advance himself by the union of the ‘Crofts and Birlings’’ however he reprimands the idea of any lower class being able to move up the social ladder yet he himself is happy to be united with the crofts as it will benefit himself, allow him to climb the social latter as the Crofts are a slightly higher class. this showcases his pompous nature as he clearly thinks he is unlike others and is able to do what he doesn’t think anyone should be able to.

Q

‘heavy looking’ - stage directions

A

plumper frame was synonymous with affluence and indulgence. heavier frame insinuate they had wealth to indulge in luxurious foods and items. my Birling adheres to the expectation of the upper class.

his heaviness is metaphorical physical assertion of his comfortability and stability as well as this his hedonistic and undiuclipined tendencies- unfair as people are without food and items yet he us indulging to the point it is visible in his physical appearance. he doesn’t control himself and isn’t mindful of others.

'’portentous’’ - used to expose superficiality of capitalists - he can only see value in wealth and assets. He dislikes the inspector overmuch

Q

comparison between he inspector and Mr Birling

A

embody true debate of capitalists and socialists as they. The inspector is an antithesis of Mr Birling, even the Inspectors appearance is used as a foil of My Birling as he creates an ‘’ impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness’’ similarly to Mr Birling being ‘‘Heavy looking’’ it is almost as if Mr Birling has met his match in order for him to be humbled.
