young's modulus Flashcards
what is young modulus?
is a measure of the ability of a material to withstand changes in length when under tension or compression
- is the ratio of stress to strain for a material obeying Hooke’s law.
what is stress?
stress is something applied to a solid by external forces. stress increases with an increase in force
what is strain?
strain is the measure of how much an object is stretched or deformed.
what is the formula for young modulus?
E= F/A / AL/L
how do you find tensile stress?
F/A
how do you find tensile strain?
AL/L
what is the yield point?
the point at which the material starts to deform plastically. after the yield point is passed, permanent plastic deformation occurs
define elastic limit?
the point till which the wire retains its original length after the force is withdrawn.
what is elastic deformation?
the temporary change in the length, volume or shaped that is produced by stress
what is plastic deformation?
a permanent change in shape of a solid body
what is ultimate tensile stress?
is the maximum stress that a material can withstand before it breaks or weakens.
what is repeated loading?
cyclic loading
is the application of repeated or fluctuating stress, strain, force or tension on a material that causes degration of the material
