brittle materials Flashcards
what is malleability?
is a physical property of metals that defines their ability to be hammered, pressed or rolled into thin sheets without breaking
what is ductility?
is the ability of a solid material that deforms under tensile stress
what is brittleness?
a material is brittle if, when subjected to stress, it breaks without little elastic deformation
what is hardness?
is a measure of how much of a material resists changes in shape
what are polymers?
are materials made of long, repeating chains of molecules
what decides the properties of a polymer?
- chain length
- chemical it is made from
- how strong the force between the chains are
- if the chains are able to slide past each other
what are practisers?
are low molecular weighted substances added to a polymer solution to promote it’s plasticity and flexibility
what is the crystallinity of a polymer?
the regions of a polymer, where the polymer chains are aligned with one another
