states of matter Flashcards
what is the solid phase?
solid has a definitive shape and volume
- molecules are arranged in a tightly packed order and molecules vibrate in place`
what is the liquid phase?
molecules are moving slowly but not fast enough to overcome the attractions between them
what is the gas phase?
molecules move very quickly and are able to break apart from one another. overcome all attraction.
what is the plasma phase?
does not have a definitive shape or volume.
molecules move very fast and break apart. can be found in fire and lightning
what is freezing?
liquid to solid
what is melting?
solid to liquid
what is boiling?
liquid to gas
what is evaporation?
liquid to gas
what is condensation?
gas to liquid
what is deposition?
gas to solid
what is sublimation?
solid to gas?
what is an absolute zero?
an object at absolute zero has minimum internal energy
what are the characteristics of giant covalent bonds?
giant covalent substances are at room temp and have high melting and boiling point. they are strong and a lot of energy is needed to break up these large structures during melting and boiling.
- cannot conduct electricity because they have no overall charge
what is the structure of metallic structure?
is based on a three dimensional arrangement with layers of positive metal ions surrounded by negative electrons
what are the characteristics of a metallic structure?
metallic bonds are very strong, have high melting points and are strong and hard. layers of metal ions slide over each other making them malleable and ductile. good conductors of electricity
