within a month over 100 000 had been arrested, by autumn pressure so great NKVD began selecting people almost at random.
Use of informers
Estimated one informer to every 400 people.
Military purge
Began 1937 with arrest of Tukhachevsky, him and 6 other commanders executed, further red army purge, c50% of all officer corps executed or imprisoned.
Resistance to executions
1937-38 up to 74 military officials shot for refusing to approve execution of people they believed innocent.
Purge of party members
A third of all party members had been purged by end of 1938.

Stalin said all should be arrested, over 56000 arrested 1937, in 1941 over 400 000 Volga Germans deported to Siberia.
The Kalmyks
in 1941 Operation Ulussy over 97 000 Kalmyk people deported, around half died before being allowed to return in 1957.
First mass deportation
Of Koreans based on accusations they were Japanese spies, led to death of around 50 000 due to starvation and disease on way.
