Front rising kick (Apcha olligi)
- Used to spring up the opponent’s punching fist at the under-forearm, or the opponent’s foot by kicking the inner tibia, using the ball of the foot
- The kicking leg should be straight on the way up and down
- This kick is also used for muscle development and flexibility
Front snap kick (Apcha busigi)
- Designed to attack an opponent in the front
- Targets: solar plexus, abdomen, scrotum, armpit, and floating ribs (never higher than the attacker’s own solar plexus)
- Tool: usually ball of the foot, but also instep, toes (e.g., with shoes on), or knee
- The knee of the kicking foot must be tucked up toward the chest prior to kicking. The attacking tool must reach the target in a straight line. The kicking foot must be withdrawn immediately after the kick in a recoil.
- The stationary foot must not pivot while kicking (toes face forward)
- Low kick reaches the same level as the umbilicus, and middle kick reaches the same level as the solar plexus
Outward downward kick (Bakuro naeryo chagi)
- This kick is used for attacking an opponent by passing over an obstacle, such as the opponent’s arm or shoulder
- Tool: back heel or ball of the foot
- Targets: skull and clavicle
- The point of focus should not be lower than the attacker’s own solar plexus because this may cause loss of power
- The tool reaches the target in a downward line from the apex of the kick (pull down, so that the fastest part of the kick is on the way down, not up)
- Performed in an outward motion by bringing the leg across the body in an arc
Side turning kick (Yop dollyo chagi)
- Used for attacking an opponent positioned in front
- Usually performed with the ball of the foot or instep, but also with the knee or toes if wearing shoes
- Turning must be executed from a suitable position, and if the position is awkward for this kick, the attacker must swiftly move into a suitable position
- Know how to perform using front leg or back leg
- Classified into low, middle, and high turning kick
- The foot reaches the target in an arc
- The toes of the kicking foot should be slightly downward
- The toes of the stationary foot should point 75o outward at the moment of impact
Side piercing kick (Yopcha jirugi)
- Know how to perform using front leg, back leg, and stepping
- Tool: the footsword
- Targets: the temple; armpit; floating ribs; neck artery; solar plexus; philthrum; point of chin
- Can be performed low, middle, and high
- Toes of the kicking foot are slightly down, and toes of stationary foot are pivoted, about 75o, allowing the hip to turn over
- The attacking tool must reach the target in a straight revolving motion
- Prior to kicking, the footsword must be brought up to the knee of the stationary leg, and then perform backward motion (tuck up)
- For maximum height, lean the body away from the kick while still maintaining balance
- Usually, a high punch is performed together with the kick unless otherwise specified
- After kicking, recoil the leg maintaining balance
